We certainly would never give permission for a surgery on our human children without first educating ourselves about the risks, and we should never do that with our growing canine kids either.
The answer as to when you should spay or neuter is not as simple as people think. It depends on current health, growth, what the breed is, and when that breed is close to full maturity.
We will not give a firm answer here as to what age to fix your puppy, because ultimately you are the parent, and you should do what you feel is best for your Basset.
Here at On My Way 2U Acres we happen to feel it is better to wait until adulthood, but that is only our opinion. There may be many reasons someone may not want to wait too late.
What we are saying is please do your research before spaying or neutering too early, as there are long term risks to having those surgeries too young. These include tumors, irregular bone growth due to hormone interruption, and dysplasia, just to name a few..
There are many websites that can better educate you on this subject, to help you make an informative decision.
